Compatible with a variety of software platforms
and hardware environments

OPERATING SYSTEM SPECIFICATIONS
Multi MIMSY 2000 incorporates the Oracle 8i database management system, the most popular relational database management system in the world. Oracle, and therefore Multi MIMSY 2000, is available on virtually every hardware and operating system platform including Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Apple, several dozen varieties of UNIX, and a number of proprietary operating systems including MPE/XL and VMS.

UNIX PLATFORMS
Oracle, and therefore Multi MIMSY, runs under several dozen versions of UNIX. If you have a question about a specific version of UNIX, please contact us.

HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS
Before you place your final hardware order, please make sure that you have submitted it to us for review. If you have any questions, please call us.

Multi MIMSY 2000 requires the following server hardware for installations under UNIX operating systems. For requirements for other operating systems and hardware, please contact us at 847 332-1200. The server specifications are for a server running only Oracle and Multi MIMSY 2000.

Multi MIMSY 2000 supports both PCs and Macs as clients. Both may be used on the same server. PC clients may run under Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows NT 4.0.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Any client on which Multi MIMSY 2000 will be installed, must be connected to the server and fully tested prior to system installation.

A communications protocol -- SPX/IPX for Novell or TCP/IP for Windows NT, UNIX, or where Macs are involved -- must be selected prior to system installation. Any other communications protocols must be approved by Willoughby Associates.

The following additional required hardware and software are needed to provide support to you under your technical support services contract. They must be installed and fully tested prior to system installation.
  • CD-ROM Drive
  • 56k data modem
  • PC Anywhere communications software for Windows 95 or higher (for 1 client workstation, minimum)

The CD-ROM is required to facilitate loading of Oracle and other software. Lack of a CD-ROM may extend time required for installation and therefore increase installation fees. The modem and PC Anywhere are required to facilitate our call-in support services. The HP Colorado tape backup, ZIP drive, or CD-R is required to facilitate exchange of data and software with our support service. The Colorado ZIP, or CD-R unit is not a replacement for your standard server backup hardware and software but is in addition to it. This hardware and software will also facilitate exchanging data with other Willoughby system users if you desire to do so in the future.
RUNNING OTHER APPLICATIONS ON THE MULTI MIMSY 2000 SERVER
For performance reasons, Oracle Corporation specifically recommends a separate database server. If other applications such as office automation suites (including word processing), e-mail, etc. are planned to be run on the same server as Oracle and Multi MIMSY 2000, the museum should check carefully with Willoughby and Oracle first and determine if this is feasible.

If you will be running more than Multi MIMSY 2000 on your server, you will need an additional amount of memory equal to what the other application(s) require. For example, if another application requires 16MB RAM, add this to the 128MB RAM required for Multi MIMSY 2000 for a total of not less than 144MB RAM. The norm that we're finding in museums (and throughout the business world) is that institutions are installing multiple servers for separate applications such as a separate e-mail server, a separate public access server, etc.

DATA EXCHANGE SPECIFICATIONS

From time to time you may need to send us data and software. For example, if we are converting an existing electronic database to Multi MIMSY 2000, sending you data we have keyed from your records as part of our Rapid Data Entry Service, or troubleshooting a problem you are experiencing and need to examine a data file. These are the specifications for preparing data for us to load into our systems as well as those that we use when sending you data. Before sending data please contact our data conversion specialist at 847-332-1200.

Acceptable Data Formats
It is preferred that the data arrive in one of the following formats with a printed listed of field names in the exact order in which they appear in the export file: If your data is an alternative format, please contact the Director of Client Services, Gayle Silverman (gsilverman@willo.com) for further information.
  • ASCII flat file with fields delimited by the Pipe Character | and records delimited by Carriage Returns.
  • FoxPro files.
  • Microsoft Access 97 or Access 2000 MDB files.
Acceptable Physical Media
Then the data must be placed on one of the following backup types/media:
  • CD (requires CD-R unit to create and must conform to ISO 9660 cross-platform standard).
  • Zip Disks
  • 3.5 diskettes
  • Backup (for MS-DOS v.5 and earlier) on 3.5" diskettes.
  • Any self-extracting backup (PKZIP, WinZIP, LHA) on 3.5" diskettes.
Need To Freeze Database after Data Are Pulled
Once your data are pulled, your database must remain "frozen" until your converted Multi MIMSY 2000 database is installed. All users must be notified that the database is frozen and that any new records they create or changes they make to existing records will be lost.
